On the weekend of September 20-21, 2024, Agawam Park in Southampton transformed into a creative hub for fashion, art, and culture as “The Tents,” hosted by Fashion and the Arts (FATA) in collaboration with theSIPnyc, returned for its second annual fundraising event. This vibrant celebration of style, talent, and community was a testament to the power of diversity and the importance of sustainability in the fashion industry.
At the heart of this event is Philena Taylor, the Brooklyn native and visionary Founder and President of FATA Fund. Taylor’s leadership and commitment to inclusivity were evident throughout the weekend, ensuring that not only the designers and entertainment reflected diversity, but the models themselves were as varied and inclusive as possible. The runway at “The Tents” was a powerful statement of representation, featuring models of all sizes, ethnicities, and backgrounds—showing the world that beauty in fashion comes in all forms.
Opening night set a joyful and dynamic tone, with comedian A.G. White lighting up the stage at the Southampton Cultural Center, offering guests laughter and entertainment. The following day, the excitement only grew, with the iconic DJ FUNKFLEX spinning a high-energy set that had attendees moving alongside a colorful array of vendors flanking the main stage. But the real centerpiece of the weekend was, undoubtedly, the fashion show that embodied the innovative theme of sustainability.
This year’s theme, “Sustainability,” challenged designers to think creatively about how to repurpose synthetic fabrics—sequins, glitter, PVC, and polyester—transforming them into chic, modern partywear. It was a powerful statement on the future of fashion, where waste can be reimagined into something beautiful, proving that glamour and environmental consciousness can go hand in hand.
Two standout designers showcased their talent on the runway, highlighting the event’s commitment to celebrating diverse voices in fashion. Carol Maraj, mother of global superstar Nicki Minaj, graced the event with a sneak peek of her highly anticipated Couture Collection by Neil Young. Her designs exuded elegance, and the inclusion of her sophisticated lingerie line added a touch of allure to the show, demonstrating Maraj’s versatility and creativity.
Equally compelling was the indigenous Cultural Collection presented by Kayla Lookinghorse, a designer from the Shinnecock reservation in Southampton. Her work reflected the richness of her heritage, blending traditional elements with contemporary style. Lookinghorse’s collection was a beautiful reminder of the deep cultural roots that exist within the fashion world, adding layers of meaning and history to the event.
Beyond the fashion, "The Tents" offered a complete sensory experience. Artisans displayed their craft, spoken word poets shared poignant messages, and emerging musicians serenaded the crowd, making the event an all-encompassing celebration of the arts. The collaboration between FATA and theSIPnyc highlighted how art forms can intertwine, creating a platform that not only entertained but also educated and inspired.
The weekend was made possible by the support of the local community, with special thanks given to Southampton Village Mayor William Manger, Jr., Trustee Robin Brown, and Suffolk County Sheriff Dr. Errol D. Toulon, Jr., whose encouraging remarks were instrumental in ensuring the success of the event. Their presence underscored the importance of community engagement in supporting cultural and philanthropic initiatives like this one.
As the second annual event came to a close, Philena Taylor and the FATA Fund extended their gratitude to all who attended and supported, emphasizing that donations are still being accepted to further their mission of merging fashion, art, and philanthropy. With a successful year behind them, the anticipation for next year’s edition of “The Tents” is already building.
Fashion lovers and art enthusiasts alike are encouraged to mark their calendars for what promises to be an even more exciting and inspiring event in 2025. Until then, the creativity and innovation displayed this year will continue to resonate, reminding us of the beauty that can emerge when diverse voices, inclusive representation, and sustainable practices come together.
