Black Long Island Statement on the Passing of Dr. Hazel N. Dukes
Black Long Island joins the nation in mourning the loss of Dr. Hazel Nell Dukes, a civil rights icon, tireless advocate, and transformative leader, who dedicated her life to the pursuit of justice, equity, and empowerment for Black communities across New York and beyond. A native of Alabama, Dr. Dukes moved to Roslyn, New York, in the 1950s, where she became a trailblazer in civil rights and civic engagement. Her passing at the age of 92 leaves an immeasurable void, but her extraordinary legacy of activism, resilience, and service will continue to inspire generations to come.
For more than seven decades, Dr. Dukes was at the forefront of the fight for racial justice, voting rights, economic development, fair housing, and quality education. As President of the NAACP New York State Conference since 1977 and a former National President of the NAACP, she paved the way for change, using her voice to champion the rights of the marginalized and underserved. Her leadership was not confined to boardrooms or political halls—she was a force on the ground, standing shoulder to shoulder with those demanding justice, from protests against police brutality to calls for better healthcare access in Black communities.
Dr. Dukes' impact on Black Long Island is undeniable. Her unwavering commitment to voter education, economic empowerment, and civic engagement mirrored our own mission to uplift and connect the Black and Pan-African communities across Long Island. She was a living testament to the power of activism, a mentor to many, and a role model who demonstrated the profound impact of service and advocacy.
Her words, “If I can help somebody as I pass along; then my living shall not have been in vain,” encapsulate the essence of her life's work. As we reflect on her legacy, Black Long Island remains committed to honoring Dr. Dukes' contributions by continuing the fight for justice, equality, and empowerment.
